In case you’ve never heard of the Cahokia city, it’s known as one of humanity’s greatest discoveries and one of the best archeological sites we’ve ever come across.

It was originally discovered by French explorers who ended up naming it Cahokia. Nobody knows the actual name of the city because, at the time when it was built (around 500 BC), the Mississippians didn’t have an actual functioning writing system, so they weren’t able to discern that part of their culture.

What they were able to decipher however was the fact that from the 16 square kilometers that the city covered over 120 pyramids were discovered.

That’s right, over 120 artificial mounds all lead the explorers to believe that 120 or more functioning pyramids once resided in the Cahokia city.

With a population of 10-20,000 inhabitants, Cahokia was by far the largest city at the time in Europe and it had the most pyramids ever recorded, even more than most ancient Egyptian cities.

Most of them were built around 10-12 AD, but unfortunately for unknown reasons, all 10-20,000 inhabitants disappeared off the face of the earth sometime around 1350.

To this day, this is one of the biggest mysteries known to man.
