This is admittedly not the Spoiler Free WICKED Movie Review I expected to be posting today. Part of me had been worried for months about this one because I generally don’t love musicals, and I know how passionate this fan base can be. Frankly, I didn’t want my not liking it to affect anyone’s experience who LOVES this world. So I considered not even reviewing it.
Blissfully was wrong.
This movie / musical / experience / event is so charming, so vibrant, so full of life, so much the reason we go to the movies / the stage / see and make art.
Cynthia Erivo is sensational as Elfiba bringing so much gravitas and impact to her difficult performance, Ariana Grande brings light, humor, and pure joy itself to her take on Glinda. Then Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater and everyone else helps ANCHOR this sensational world. (And Jonathan Bailey steals every scene he’s in.) Jon M Chu has brought us something special here. What a ride. What a wonderful well designed and articulated world, what a time at the movies.
I get it now.

Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked: Part I) is a 2024 American epic musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, which in turn was loosely based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire.[1] The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande,[b] with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum in supporting roles.[7] Set in the Land of Oz, largely before Dorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, the plot covers the events of the musical's first act, following green-skinned Elphaba's studies at Shiz University and the beginning of her path to ultimately becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, alongside an unlikely friendship with a classmate who later becomes Glinda the Good Witch of the North.[8]
Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, both of whom produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in their respective roles in 2021. It was also decided to split the film into two parts to meet the demands of the story's epic scope and to expand upon the journeys of and relationships between the characters, without cutting any songs or major plot points. Principal photography on both films began in December 2022 in England, but was disrupted in July 2023 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, eventually concluding in January 2024.
Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on November 22, 2024. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised Chu's direction, the performances of the cast, production values, emotional weight and faithfulness to the source material, while the cinematography, visual effects and runtime received some criticism. The sequel, Wicked Part Two, is scheduled to be released on November 21, 2025.
