The European Union said on Monday it was seeking to engage diplomatically with the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on several European countries amid tensions over Greenland, while warning it was prepared to respond if necessary.

Trump alarmed European leaders over the weekend after declaring he would levy additional tariffs on EU member states Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, as well as non-EU countries Britain and Norway, unless Greenland is ceded to the United States.

EU trade spokesperson Olof Gill said the bloc’s immediate focus was on dialogue rather than escalation. “Our priority is to engage, not escalate,” Gill said, adding that restrain can at times be the most responsible form of leadership.

The European Union is weighing several possible countermeasures if President Donald Trump follows through on his tariff threats and refuses to de-escalate, EU officials said.
