The film follows a new entry recruit from a London recruiting office attending the shore establishment HMS Ganges and his training, including kit issue and care, drill, exercise andclassroom technical training at various levels.
Various elements in the training are stressed, eg cultivation of team spirit with controlled competitiveness, discipline with ability to command, trainees are taken to sea on a destroyer.
when his training is complete the new recruit joins his first ship.

HMS Ganges was a training ship and later stone frigate of the Royal Navy. She was established as a boys' training establishment in 1865, and was based aboard a number of hulks before moving ashore. She was based alternately in Falmouth, Harwich (from 1899) and Shotley (from 1905). She remained in service at RNTE Shotley until October 1976.

HMS Ganges was also known as Shotley Training Establishment.
