Ultra-rare 1980 (possibly 1981) Bronze Supraphonic (flat shell, not hammered). 6.5"x14", Blue/Olive badge. Very few of these are known to exist. Myron Grombacher owns one, and used it on most Pat Benatar recordings, and his recordings with Lita Ford. Though he had his outfitted with Ludwig Dual Channel hoops. These are different than the current bronze Supras (Ludwig's metal shells are currently produced by a different manufacturer to different specs).
This particular bronze Supra was purchased new in 1980 or 1981 by "Fast" Joey Brighton of Twisted Sister, and played on tour with TS in 1981 and 1982. It was passed on to a friend of his in the early 2000's. Joey passed away in 2010. That friend loaned the drum to Willy DeVille's drummer, Shawn Murray, who sold the drum for his friend, to me, on January 2nd 2015.
This drum records like a charm. It sits in a mix really nicely. The overtones are very musical and blend into the music like sour cream into your chili. As you can tell, it sounds extremely fat, and truly has that 80's pop-rock sound.
Recording setup for the snare: SM57 on top, going through a Golden Age Project Pre-73 and EQ-73 with minimal EQ, Heil PR20 on bottom, going into a Focusrite Octopre MkII. Minimal processing overall. Just some slight EQ and compression on the master buss and fairly heavy compression on the room mics.
