Currently, building a home results in a very permanent solution. It’s a cyclical process of building, then selling, when it no longer fits our needs. Renovating a home is always an alternative, but the results are often costly, structurally challenging and extremely wasteful. This project is an exploration of building architecture that adapts to the users changing needs—thinking of housing as a system of interchangeable parts, rather than one, finished masterpiece.

Most homebuyers don’t have the funds to purchase the home that works best for them, or the insight to their needs in the future. This system allows the owners to begin building their dream home, bit by bit, rather than all at once. By establishing a wireframe structure early on, they are able to expand their living space without adding significant structural costs. Until that time, the empty space serves as an outdoor space—adding to the square footage with minimal cost.

Economically, the larger cost of the home is upfront—with the intention that additions will be significantly cheaper later, because there are no structural/foundational changes to be made—it’s just adding new partitions to fit between the frame.

This allows a home to be built alongside the changing needs of the user, instead of all at once. Moving the idea of a “home” from something that is permanent to something that is more adaptable to our needs.
