Thousands of Yemenis have gathered in the city of Sanaa for the funeral of Houthi prime minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi and other officials killed in an Israeli air strike last week.

Al-Rahawi, appointed in 2024, is the most senior Houthi leader confirmed dead since Israel began its campaign against Houthi targets in Yemen. The Houthis have long supported Palestinians in Gaza and have escalated missile and drone attacks on Israel since the war in Gaza began in October 2023.

Analysts say the killing of the prime minister signals a shift in Israel’s approach. US-based Yemen expert Mohammed Al Basha pointed out that Israeli forces had previously concentrated on infrastructure like ports and power stations, but these strikes “indicate a shift in Israeli operational focus away from transportation and energy infrastructure toward targeted assassinations of high-value personnel”.
