Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday announced the appointment of labor union veteran Jahmila Edwards to lead the Office of Intergovernmental Relations during a visit to the Greenpoint Public Library.

Edwards will be tasked with securing funding from Albany for the administration's affordability agenda while navigating a $2 billion budget shortfall projected by the city's comptroller.

During the announcement, Mamdani highlighted his commitment to city staff. "For so long these very workers have had to advocate for their very existence as opposed to advocate for the services that they would like to provide," Mamdani said.

Mamdani said the appointment will be pivotal in navigating the city's "fiscal reality" while attempting to deliver on his affordability agenda.
