The Indian judicial system follows a hierarchical structure, meaning courts are arranged in levels based on their authority.
1. Supreme Court of India
• It is the highest court in the country.
• Its decisions are binding on all other courts.
• It deals with constitutional matters, appeals, and fundamental rights.

2. High Courts (State Level)
• Each state or group of states has a High Court.
• High Courts hear appeals from subordinate courts and have writ jurisdiction under
Articles 226.
• They supervise all courts within their state.

3. Subordinate Courts (District Level)
These courts work at the district level and are
divided into civil and criminal courts.
A. District & Sessions Judge
• The District Judge is the highest judicial authority in a district.
• As a Sessions Judge, they handle serious criminal cases.
B. Civil Courts
• Civil Judge (Senior Division): Handles higher-value civil cases.
• Civil Judge (Junior Division): Handles lower-value civil disputes.
C. Criminal Courts
• Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM):
Supervises magistrate courts in the district.
• Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC):
Tries less serious criminal offences.
