Welcome back!

My sewing room has been very busy, and is getting messy!

First, I have finished a quilt this week. This one features four applique orphan blocks in the center, some hand embroidery, crocheted lace, many many hourglass units using red and black shirts, and quilting with different colored threads. On the back, I made some large HSTs with reds and grays, and put on a stripey binding.

There are SO many projects out in my sewing room at the moment! I don't like to put away things which I intend to work on soon, because I don't want them to be forgotten (out of sight, out of mind). I got another quilt basted this week-- the jellyroll and embroidery one which I have shown a lot of recently. I'm also still working on my twine rug and Cathedral Windows wall hanging here and there, and have made some good progress on them.

It's also on my list to make a pillow for my friend who gave me some of her grandmother's old projects; she would like a Dresden Plate pillow, but there are several Dresden Plates already made, so I may also make a wall hanging. Another friend gave me a vintage quilt top recently, and some of the white fabrics in it need to be replaced; I would like to do that right away, to make sure it doesn't just get put away and forgotten about. Another friend lost her husband recently, and has asked me to make some pillows using his shirts. I'm not sure on the details of this project yet, but I want to get started on it sooner than later.

In the way of piecing, I've been doing some scrap management and sewing together my white and neutral strips into 4 1/2"squares, so that they will be useable in the future when I need a border. In the same spirit, I've been cutting up some neutral and pastel shirts with the idea of making a backing or two, so that when a quilt top is finished, I can grab a back that is already made.

I'll show you how I think about cutting up the shirts to get as much as I can use out of them. I am starting with large 10" squares to use for the back, but after those are cut out of the center back panel of shirt, there are some weirdly shaped edges which still have plenty of useable fabric. So from there I cut out as many 2 1/2" squares as I can, and then get as many 1 1/2" squares as I can. It takes some time, but it has made me very excited to work with these springy colors!
