He overhears them discussing a secret plan involving a small square wooden box that they handle with extreme care. After seeing them pour white grains into the box and hearing a clicking sound, the narrator becomes convinced that they are terrorists planning to blow up the ship with a bomb.

Terrified by the thought of an explosion, the narrator decides to hide in a lifeboat to watch the men, who plan to trigger their device at ten o'clock that night. As the men count down the final minutes and prepare to pull a string attached to the box, the narrator can no longer control his fear. He screams and jumps out from his hiding place to stop them, accusing them of trying to kill everyone on board.

The two men are startled but proceed to pull the trigger, which simply opens the box and releases two carrier pigeons into the air. The narrator realizes that instead of a bomb, the box was a trap for a pigeon-flying contest to see whose bird could race back to land first. The men had been secretive only because captains often dislike having sporting events on their ships, and the mysterious white grains were actually just bird feed.
