If you are on a motor policy here in Hong Kong, then it is important to understand the coverage, and a very big part of this coverage is in fact the excesses. All policies had excesses, the excesses only in fact apply in thy event of property damage, if there is personal injury damage or personal injury situation then all the motor policy in Hong Kong has zero excess. Ok so we are just talking about damage to over people property here, typically somebody else car. First of all I would like to talk about third party only policy, in this case, they are generally four excesses which might be applicable. The first is called the Third Party Property Damage Excess, it is the general excess which apply to the cost of the damage caused by you to somebody else vehicle, the next three types are all related to specific cases, they are commonly called TPPDYIU, why does that mean ? What it means is that if you are a Y Young Driver which in Hong Kong is under 25. Then you will pay have an additional excess on your policy, the second one is I, I is related to Inexperience, so if you have less than two years driving experience, then there is typically an additional excess which can apply to your policy and finally U, U stand for Unnamed, what that mean is if you are not named on the insurance policy then you will may be have an additional excess, the excesses are cumulative, so in the event of an accident, if you are young, inexperienced and not named in the policy you would have all the excesses together in addition to the general TTPD excess, this situation is common in many countries, if you want more information about it then I suggest you contact us. The second types of excesses are relative to comprehensive insurance, comprehensive insurance the third party damages properties are style applicable, but there is also an excess in the event that you have an accident cause by you and your own vehicle need to be repaired. They are basically 3 excesses, a general excess a parking excess and finally a thief excess, so for example if you have an accident caused by you, and your vehicle need to be repaired, then there is generally a general excess which need to be applied, a parking excess applies in the situation whereby you are in a car park, you vehicle is damaged, there is no third party and you car need to be repaired, and finally there is a thief excess, so in another word if you car is stolen then you may be liable to pay the first part of the thief excess.
