When you least expect it, here comes an update for Splatoon 3! Perhaps in celebration of the release of the Switch 2, Splatoon 3’s been updated to version 10.0.0. The previous two Splatoon games both came with a final set of “third version” weapons—Sheldon’s Picks for Splatoon 1 and the Toni Kensa Collection for Splatoon 2, and just when people thought Splatoon 3 was going to go without one, they release the biggest one yet: 30 different weapons, from the new brands Barazushi and Emberz.
I decided I’m no longer going to cover each weapon in a video series, one by one. I never actually finish them anyway. So instead, I’ll showcase three weapons based on main weapons I know pretty well, ones I’m familiar with, as I also wanted to see if I’m still up for it. Based on what I saw, I’d say so—I’m not at the level I used to be, but I could still play decently well, and I plan to put up some Mario Kart World footage soon.
In addition, we have one last stage, the return of Urchin Underpass, a stage conspicuously missing from the series up until now. Urchin Underpass was one of the most iconic Splatoon stages, used a lot in promotional material, that it was weird for it to not return in Splatoon 2 or Splatoon 3, even though it turned up as a battle arena in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Well, here it is, albeit in a much smaller form.
For the record, these were played on the Switch 1.
01:41 - Match #1
Bluefin Depot
Turf War
Colorz Aerospray
Color Scheme: Jam & Marmalade
Song: “Candy-Coated Rocks” by Damp Socks feat. Off the Hook
Of course, the game had other plans than to let me play on Urchin Underpass. But might as well test things on familiar grounds. To be frank, I hadn’t used any form of the Aerospray in a while, just that it’s easy to use and helps towards your goals in Turf War pretty well. This one comes with the Burst Bombs and the Splattecolor Screen. I have barely used any weapons with a Splattercolor Screen, so I really can’t tell how much of an effect it’s had on my opponents hit by it, but I tried not to get in the way of a teammate’s field of vision.
05:17 - Match #2
Bluefin Depot
Turf War
Torrentz Hydra Splatling
Color Scheme: Action Movie Poster
Song: “Headhunter” by C-Side
The Torrentz Hydra Splatling has one word to describe it: “fortress.” The Hydra Splatling already wants opponents to keep distance away, but the kit reinforces that with the Sprinkler and the Big Bubbler. Though it’s great to just play from your favorite ledge and use it like an E-liter, I realized through this match that I’m more effective when I actually confront opponents and take the risk of going where I’m vulnerable.
08:55 - Match #3
Urchin Underpass
Turf War
BRN-Z Painbrush
Color Scheme: Field of Flowers
Song: “Rockagilly Blues” by Yoko & the Gold Bazookas
Finally, here’s a match on Urchin Underpass. Feel free to skip to this part of the video if that’s the one you’re interested in, but it really trips some people up, having not had a new stage in quite a while and, being located in a series of alleyways, is full of blind corners where people could sneak around undetected and catch players off-guard. Me, I feel like the Painbrush remains one of my best weapons, though I’m not so great using the Splash Wall or the Trizooka, but I caught a bunch of opponents anyway.
Please let me know if you’d like me to continue Splatoon 3 coverage. I feared I would let down my teammates, but it seems that I can remain valuable. I actually have a bunch of footage from the last Splatfest kept around—would you like me to show that?
