Scientific name: Daubentonia madagascariensis

Endemic to Madagascar, it is the world's largest nocturnal primate and belongs to its own family.

Has elongated middle finger used to tap on trees and extract grubs/larvae from inside, its primary food source.

Finger is assisted by specialized nails and studies indicate it has world's smallest muscles for its finger tip sensitivity.

Large ears, eyes, nocturnal habits adapted for acoustic location of grubs under bark in the dark forest. Jaw/skull also specialized.

Solitary and territorial, uses urine scent marking. Gestation 130-140 days, one offspring at a time which is carried for 2 months.

Listed as Near Threatened due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure. Population declining.

Renowned for its unusual appearance with thin fur, large eyes, finger and rodent-like tail. Rare footage available.

Plays an important role in seed dispersal but remains one of Madagascar's most misunderstood mammals due to folklore about "bad luck".

A unique survivor from an evolutionary lineage that split from other primates over 60 million years ago.
