I wanted to write a country song about not fitting the “Nashville” normal. I don’t wear flannel or Carhartt, I prefer piano ballads over guitar solos, I’m an openly gay man in a traditionally conservative genre…it feels like in order to be a “country singer” there’s all these so-called rules and guidelines for what makes a true Nashville country singer. But I very quickly found that I don’t follow a lot of these rules. And this song begins to explore the question of: What if that’s okay? And even beyond country music, what if it’s ok to not fit all the time? What would happen if we all lived authentically, honestly, and…unapologetically?
