Auto sales grew roughly 50,000 units during the first-quarter of 2024, an estimated 14-per-cent gain that resulted in the best start to the year since pre-pandemic 2019.

Bigger news surrounds the explosive gains made by a variety of high-volume Japanese brands. Subaru jumped 86 per cent, Honda posted a 70-per-cent surge, Nissan rose 49 per cent, and Toyota shot up 36 per cent. Granted, some of these gains can be explained, at least in some small measure, by how challenging these brands found the first-quarter of 2023. Nevertheless, these are big sales victories, particularly given the fact that a wide array of domestic brands are pacing well below the industry average.
