Transcript: China EV Post is reporting that Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC has filed a lawsuit against Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio, alleging the company misled investors over how it reported revenue from its battery business. The dispute centers around Nio’s Battery as a Service model, managed by a joint venture called Mirattery, established in 2020 with CATL and other partners.

GIC, which bought more than 54 million Nio shares between August 2020 and July 2022, claims Nio inflated revenue by recognizing battery sales up front rather than over time. The fund links those practices to the company’s dramatic stock surge that peaked at nearly $67 in early 2021. Today, Nio shares are trading below $7.

The lawsuit hinges in part on a controversial 2022 short-seller report by Grizzly Research, which accused Nio of using accounting tricks similar to those once used by Valeant. Nio later conducted an internal review and denied any wrongdoing, with multiple Wall Street analysts backing that conclusion.

For now, the case has been paused by a U.S. court while a related class action lawsuit plays out. Nio has no obligation to respond until that prior case is resolved.
