Why IBM Fired 8000 Employees ? What Happened after That !
In 2023, *IBM laid off 8,000 employees* from its **human resources (HR) department**.
The reason for these layoffs was the implementation of a new **artificial intelligence (AI) system called AskHR**, designed to automate routine tasks like payroll, vacation requests, and employee documentation.
IBM initially aimed to streamline operations, *reduce costs**, and **boost productivity* through this automation.
Indeed, IBM reported an impressive *$3.5 billion increase in productivity* across more than 70 job roles.
However, the company's total workforce *did not shrink* as expected; instead, IBM ended up **rehiring just as many people**.
CEO Arvind Krishna explained that the savings from automation were *reinvested into hiring more skilled workers* for roles requiring human creativity and expertise, such as **software engineering, sales, and marketing**.
This demonstrates that while AI automated routine tasks, it **created demand for roles requiring creative thinking, problem-solving, and human interaction**, skills AI cannot easily replicate.
IBM's AskHR platform processed over **11.5 million interactions in 2024**, leading to a significant **improvement in customer satisfaction scores**, with its net promoter score (NPS) surging from -35 to +74.
Despite AI's high success rate, **6% of requests still required human assistance**, indicating that AI cannot entirely replace nuanced understanding and empathy.
IBM's experience highlights a broader trend where AI is not just replacing workers but **transforming job types**, allowing workers to focus on more **strategic and innovative roles**.
