Charles Leclerc has become an instant meme after images of the Ferrari star went viral following his DNF at the Dutch Grand Prix overnight.

Australia’s Oscar Piastri converted his pole position into his seventh win of the season to extend his championship lead to 34 points after engine failure made Lando Norris unable to finish the race in a cruel blow to the Brit’s championship hopes.

Leclerc started sixth on the grid but his race turned into a disaster when Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli crashed into him as they went wheel-to-wheel around one of the banked turns at Zandvoort.

Antonelli bumped into Leclerc and sent his Ferrari spinning and his front wing clipped off when he made contact with the wall.

The Italian teenager was given a 10-second penalty for the incident on top of a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, relegating him to 16th for the race.

The incident on lap 53 prompted a safety car and Leclerc’s car was winched over the barriers.

Leclerc hopped over the fence, removed his helmet and sat down on his haunches on a grassy knoll at the Zandvoort track. Surrounded by shrubs, he looked into the distance as photographers captured the Monegasque superstar brooding on a Dutch seaside hill.

In comical scenes he was still sitting trackside on lap 66, half an hour later, as the race came to an end.
