Come From Away's real-life Pilot Beverley Bass was the first woman captain at American Airlines. She was flying from Paris to Dallas on September 11, 2001. After learning two planes had hit the World Trade Center, her plane was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, along with 37 other flights. For five days, 7,000 people who had "come from away" were stranded in Gander. The people of Gander showed kindness and generosity as they cared for "the plane people."
