He also worked at Queen for a couple decades before founding Great Eastern Cutlery in 2006

Dave Shirly ~ founded Northwoods over 30 years ago, focusing on recreating designs and patterns that have been favored for generations.

Mike Stewart ~ Founded Bark River Knives in 2001 in Escanaba, Michigan. Stewart's company blends traditional knife-making techniques with modern materials, creating durable, high-quality knives for outdoor enthusiasts. Before founding Bark River Knives, he worked for Marble's, another Michigan knife manufacturer


This could be the highest quality knife I own. It is DAMN GOOD!!

I wanted to add some information I found about the Marbles MSA knives. These knives were issued in very limited quantities. From the information I’ve been able to find I believe each handle material was produced in quantities of 400 or less. The company was owned by Dave Shirley. He was responsible for several different brands. His company made the Marbles MSA brand, Scagel reproductions and Northwoods brand knives.

“His company, Bowie Corporation, came to be around 1985. Through that enterprise he became known for his Marbles knives, blanked by Queen Cutlery and finished by Bowie. He's especially proud of collaboration with Mike Stewart, who now heads Bark River Knives, to produce the only Marbles knives ever to feature a date stamp.”

Here are the patterns I have heard exist:

(1) Mini Trapper it states 1 of 350
(2) Easy Open Tear Drop Jack - # Unknown
(3) English Jack - # Unknown
(4) Large Stockman - # Unknown
(5) Congress - # Unknown
(6) Whittler - # Unknown

I have seen them in Ivory, Stag, and Buffalo Horn, with production numbers of 25 each. I have seen them in brown, blue and red bone with either Stag or Italian jigging (pin feather).
