In early 1998 Caleb Technology also known as Calebstor based in Boulder Colorado released the 144 megabyte floppy disk. They called this new variant the "it" disk and gave it the UHD moniker which stands for Ultra High Density. At this time the highly successful 650 megabyte CD-R, Zip disk and the competing 120 megabyte SuperDisk LS-120 floppy disk were also being sold to the consumers. Caleb Technologies had high hopes that this new floppy disk variant would be the next successor to the standard 1.44MB floppy disk but that never happened for a few reasons.

Only one company sold, distributed and manufactured this format which was Caleb and only Caleb. This never helps regarding any new data storage format in general. Consumers had to put into consideration that if they invested in this new storage format they had to use Caleb branded drives. The Caleb model UHD144 a.k.a UHD144i exclusively. The drives that were sold were only internal drives for IBM Windows based desktop computers. No portable drives were ever released which failed to gain the attraction of the users of mobile computing.

This UHD floppy disk format was only compatible with the Windows operating system so the Apple Mac users were not interested in this product at all and Caleb lost a huge percentage of the consumer market. By the time 2002 came around the Caleb company had to declare bankruptcy and they ceased to exist. The hope of becoming the new go to format for data storage was crushed by the higher performance and wider compatibility of the recordable CD, DVD and USB thumb drive.
