Matthew Gillespie, MD, Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Co-director of the Topolewski Pediatric Heart Valve Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), explains transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement.

Pulmonary valve regurgitation occurs when the pulmonary valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak backward into the right ventricle. Over time, this can strain the heart and lead to right-sided heart failure.

A transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement is a minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to replace the leaking valve without open-heart surgery. Using a catheter inserted through a vein in the leg, an artificial valve is guided into place and expanded, restoring healthy blood flow from the heart to the lungs.

Because this approach avoids opening the chest, recovery is typically quicker, and most children can return to normal activities within a week.
