During a tense Senate hearing, a U.S. senator confronted the Biden administration over months of inaction following the discovery of radioactive contamination at Jana Elementary School in Florissant, Missouri.

Parents and students in the Hazelwood School District learned last fall that their school may have been contaminated by radioactive waste linked to the Manhattan Project. Independent third-party testing later confirmed the presence of radioactive material, forcing the school to close.

Students were sent home for months, placed into remote learning that parents say failed their children, and eventually bused to multiple other school districts. Despite repeated requests for federal testing and cleanup, the school remains closed, no remediation has begun, and families say they have received no clear answers.


At the hearing, the senator accused federal agencies of playing a bureaucratic blame game, with the Department of Energy and the Army Corps of Engineers pointing fingers at each other while children remain displaced.

“This happened in October. It is now April,” the senator said. “Parents have no answers.”

The senator vowed to block Department of Energy nominees and legislation until the school is cleaned up and reopened, warning that working-class families should not be ignored simply because they lack political influence.
