Climate change is no longer a distant threat. As the last two years of severe drought—coupled with one of the wettest October days on record—show, weather extremes are hitting California hard, and that is having major implications for the state’s water system. Alvar Escriva-Bou, senior fellow at the PPIC Water Policy Center, moderates a panel on how we can adapt our infrastructure and management practices during the first day of the 2021 conference, “Seizing the Drought: Water Priorities for Our Changing Climate.” The panel, “Making Our Water Infrastructure Climate-Ready,” includes Ali Forsythe, environmental planning and permitting manager of Sites Project Authority; Karla Nemeth, director of the California Department of Water Resources; Tim Ramirez, board member of the Central Valley Flood Protection Board; and Daniel Swain, climate scientist at the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, UCLA.
