Syntropic farming is an intensive form of agroforestry that imitates market gardening and slash-and-mulch agroforestry. It provides yields at all stages of succession, generates its own fertility, and aims to create a productive forest that imitates the structure and function of native forests.

During this 1.5-hour webinar, Scott Gallant of Porvenir Design in Costa Rica will walk us through the design process used in Syntropic Farming he’s experienced over the last decade of work.. Together, we will explore the decision-making around plant selection, site preparation, row orientation, fertilization and more for a young agroforestry system.

Scott will explore Syntropic Farming across three major climatic zones: the Mediterranean, continental Temperate and the wet-dry Tropics. He’ll share:
how and why the patterns and principles of syntropic farming can be used in any climate.
what farms and practitioners are planting, designing and learning in these novel contexts.
identify the major differences, challenges and unknowns adapting Syntropic Farming outside of the tropics.
and, review lessons from two recent installation case studies in central Hungary and southern Italy.

This will be a survey of innovative Syntropic Farming ideas and practices that you may adapt back to your land wherever you are in the world. There remain many unknowns as we trial new agricultural methodologies in new contexts, but the underlying recognition from early adopters is that Syntropic Farming can work wherever you are as long as you are committed to the principles.
