⚖️ What is SB 497?
SB 497, authored by Senator Scott Wiener, aims to block California agencies, officials, and healthcare providers from sharing prescription drug data—including records of cross-sex hormones, puberty blockers, and other controlled substances—with out-of-state authorities investigating transgender medical interventions, unless ordered by a court-issued warrant or subpoena.

If passed, SB 497 would:

Turn California’s CURES database—a system originally designed to monitor and prevent drug abuse—into a legal shield protecting doctors and providers administering transgender drugs and surgeries, even to minors.

Obstruct other states from investigating medical providers offering gender transitions to out-of-state children who travel to California.

Further entrench California as a “sanctuary state” for child gender transitions.

Opponents of SB 497, including the California Family Council, argue that the bill:

Although the bill passed with a 9-2 vote in June, it was re-referred and, due to a lack of full quorum, the final vote was placed on hold. The bill is expected to be voted on TODAY once full quorum is reached. If passed, it will proceed to the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
