MQTT was invented in 1999, its current version MQTT 5 was released 2019. Some of the improvements that were identified by the OASIS Technical Committee with help of the MQTT community:

• Improved error reporting
• Better scalability and performance
• Improved support for smaller clients
• Formalized common patterns
• More extensibility for the protocol
