Facing another harsh Toronto winter – in the midst of a continuing pandemic – an increasing number of people continue to experience houselessness in our city. The Blanket Coat Project is an initiative that provides coats to our unhoused neighbours in the Toronto area.

With a background as tailors and garment workers, we thought one thing we could do is make coats. We decided that a blanket coat design would be the best option. It is a uniquely Canadian type of coat, worn here for almost 400 years. Our coat is made of and lined with high quality wool for maximum warmth, cut large to fit a wide range of body types and paired with a belt. It is of simple construction, allowing us to enlist help from home sewers to make more than we can produce ourselves. To support this effort, we have created this step-by-step video guide to assembling the coats.

If you are in the Toronto area, have intermediate-level sewing skills and are interested in sewing a coat for the project, please send an email with your contact information to [email protected]. You will be added to a list to be contacted when we are ready to begin another run of coats. You will need a sewing machine, steam iron and good quality sewing thread. We will be cutting out the coat pieces at our studio and organizing contactless pick-up and drop-off dates for volunteers.

If you would like to help but cannot sew, we are accepting contributions to cover materials to buy fabric and notions used to make coats.
