Welcome to Sloth School at Toucan Rescue Ranch!

Описание к видео Welcome to Sloth School at Toucan Rescue Ranch!

Have you ever been to Sloth School before?

In 2017 Toucan Rescue Ranch and The Sloth Institute came together to form Saving Sloths Together (SST), a Costa Rica-wide project seeking greater opportunities for sloths in need. By combining each organization’s skills and knowledge, we can improve the sloth rescue, rehabilitation, and release process in Costa Rica. This partnership utilizes scientific expertise, dedication, passion, and decades of experience to provide the best program for every sloth needing help gaining a second chance at a life in the wild.

Pre-school: Newborn to 3 months old. The focus is on growing and drinking their milk! Start to taste various solid foods, but it isn't a main diet staple yet.

Elementary School: Less than 6 months old. At this stage, the focus is on eating more solids and getting more climbing practice while staying close to the nursery for warmth and milk.

Middle School: 6 months to 1 year. Solids make up most of the diet at this point. Focus on climbing more, becoming more nocturnal, and being more independent.

High School: 1-year - 1.5-years focus is on weaning off milk and growing large enough and independent enough for the "classroom" enclosure.

College: 1.5 years plus, graduate to the Pre-Release Enclosure - focus on eating more wild foods, weather, environmental changes, total independence, etc.

Why do Sloths Need Help?
Historically, sloths have been a highly successful arboreal species; however, growing human interactions and development in Costa Rica have made it difficult for them to thrive. As humans move further into the forests and coastlines, destroying natural habitats, sloths have been negatively impacted, and greater numbers are dying. Couple this with the growing social media trends and publicities, and sloths face more threats to survival than ever before. While Costa Rica sloths are not yet ENdangered, they are IN danger and need our help before it’s too late.

Why do we have Sloths called High Schoolers?
Sloths are brought to the Toucan Rescue Ranch for various reasons. Common incidents include electrocution from power lines, car accidents, dog attacks, and human encroachment, such as deforestation and the illegal pet trade. Oftentimes, baby sloths suffer from injuries and the loss of their mother from said incidents. Sometimes babies are found abandoned by their mothers for unknown reasons. This is when TRR steps in. We rescue these hurt sloths and give them a second shot at life to release them back into the wild once they “graduate” from the rehabilitation and release program.

These are the baby sloths of Toucan Rescue Ranch who lost their mothers.

They are orphaned by car accidents, electrocution, dog attacks and deforestation

When the orphans arrive at the Toucan Rescue Ranch they are put with other sloths matching their size, health and skill levels.

They play on ropes tied to rocking chairs to learn how to navigate moving branches in the wild

These babies are “Preschoolers”

Once they gain health and weight they graduate to “High School”

They have around the clock care by a sloth team and a personal vet

Once they reach weight requirements and show natural behaviors they are placed in a large pre-release enclosure in the rainforest

In this pre-release enclosure, they develop the final natural behaviors required to be released as fully wild and free animals

This journey of an orphaned sloth’s rescue, rehab and release normally takes 2 years
