Описание к видео Dead Mall Tour: Northway Mall 2015 (Now The Block Northway) Pittsburgh

(4/21/15) You may remember a video I did awhile back of a former mall that was in Butler, PA. Well I decided since this mall is such a historic landmark and it might be no more I decided to give a tour of it. A little history of the Northway Mall: Northway Mall originally opened in 1953 as a strip mall called either the Northway Shopping Center or the McKnight Road Plaza (It was one of the earliest and oldest suburban shopping centers to open in the greater Pittsburgh area). In 1962 it was expanded and enclosed into a mall which became Northway Mall as well as the first enclosed shopping center in the state of Pennsylvania. In either the 1970's or 80's I think the mall went under its first renovation (I believe around 1986 to compete with the more bigger and "new" (well -- at the time) Ross Park Mall down the street) and another one in 1996. In 2007 the mall was facing foreclosure and a lack of tenants; so then part of the mall was torn down to make way for a parking lot and an Aldi and was redeveloped into a hybrid center called the Shoppes At Northway. Now once again the mall going under yet another redevelopment to something called The Block Northway which is something called a concept center whatever the hell that is. Probably a mixture of a lifestyle and an traditional enclosed mall (and maybe an office building). For more history of this mall check out the Mall Hall-of-Fame Blogspot article which I will post in the description. One of the things I hope is that this mall remains an enclosed mall like some of the tenants claim.

UPDATE 8/4/2016

The final floor plans and renderings of the proposed mall/shopping center have final been released to the general public. According to the official floor plans indicate that the mall will most likely be at least 80% an outdoor kinda deal. However between 20-25% of the mall will remain enclosed which includes the center court as seen in the thumbnail for this video. Also from what it appears according to the lower level floor plans, most of the lower level of the former Horne's anchor structure (where Dick's and Value City used to occupided before they relocated [or at least Dick's did]) will be converted into an underground parking garage; and apparently the Schindler 300A which was installed in 1996 during a renovation that occurred in that year which replaced the old scenic 1962 Marshall as the mall's main elevator for easier access as well making the lower level of the main court ADA compliant due to regulations, has been completely removed and once again making (possibly) the glass elevator the main elevator in the mall (which is ironic because the glass elevator was originally at one point the main elevator in the mall, and I just find it funny that [at least from what I believe that] it's once again the main elevator in the mall).

Oh yeah one more thing I wanna mention... It will be re-opening soon to the public by fall of this year which is very very soon. Who knows; maybe they'll open it ahead of schedule like within the next week or two. Whenever that happens (if it hasn't already) I'll be there to give a full tour of the newly rebuilt (and remodeled as well) Northway Mall! AKA now 'The Block Northway'.
