(1) Moonrise
While my anxiety stood phoning last evening,
My simpler self lay marvelling through glass
At the full moon marbling the clouds, climbing
In shafts, a headlamp through an underpass,
Until it swung free, cratered, deadly clear,
Earth's stillborn twin unsoiled by life or air.
And while our voices huddled mouth to ear,
I watched tenacity of long imagination
Cast her again in a film of the old goddess,
Chaste of the chase, more virgin than the Virgin,
Lifting herself from that rucked, unfeeling waste
As from the desert of her own ruined face.
Such an unhinging light. To see her. To see that.
As no one else had seen her. Or might see that.
Anne Stevenson
'The Moon and I' was commissioned by the Ludlow English Song Festival, UK, and first performed there by Kathryn Rudge, mezzo-soprano, and Iain Burnside, piano, in October 2021.
