Discover Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France, located in Chamonix Mont-Blanc.
In this video, I travel by the historic Montenvers train, take the cable car down to the glacier, and walk inside the famous Mer de Glace ice cave, carved fresh every year inside the moving ice.

Mer de Glace, meaning “Sea of Ice,” is the biggest glacier in the French Alps, stretching around 7 km and reaching ice thicknesses of up to 200 meters. The Montenvers rack railway, opened in 1908, was built specifically to bring visitors from Chamonix to this glacier viewpoint at 1,913 meters above sea level.

From Montenvers, I descend by gondola and stairs to reach the glacier. The number of stairs increases every year, clearly showing how much Mer de Glace has retreated due to climate change. Just over a century ago, the ice reached almost the level of the station.

The highlight of the visit is the Mer de Glace ice cave (Grotte de Glace). This glacier cave is recarved every year because the glacier moves around 70–90 meters annually. Inside, the temperature stays close to 0°C, and the deep blue ice reveals how compressed glacier ice filters light.

Mer de Glace has fascinated travelers and writers for centuries, including Mary Shelley, Goethe, and Victor Hugo. Today, it remains one of the most iconic natural attractions in Chamonix, offering stunning views of the Mont Blanc massif and a powerful reminder of how fast Alpine glaciers are changing.
