Canon R7 - All You Need To Know

If you are looking for a versatile and powerful camera with a cropped sensor, you might want to check out the Canon R7. This camera has a 32.5 MP APS-C sensor that delivers stunning image quality, and it’s actually the first APS-C mirrorless camera from Canon that uses the RF mount, which gives it access to a wide range of high-quality lenses. It is the sister model to the more affordable R10, launched alongside it, and is targeted at the more enthusiast photographer market. It boasts a fast and accurate autofocus system, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and dual card slots for backup, amongst many other features, all of which we cover in this review.

The Canon R7 boasts a robust and ergonomic body similar to that of a DSLR. Its large grip provides a secure and comfortable hold. The magnesium alloy chassis and polycarbonate exterior makes it weather-sealed against dust and moisture.
In terms of usability, the R7 features a 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen that is bright and responsive, enabling you to change settings, select focus points, and review images.
You can also flip the screen out to face forward for selfies or vlogging.
The camera also includes an electronic viewfinder that uses a 0.39-inch OLED screen. The EVF provides a bright and detailed view of your scene, with 100% coverage and 0.95 times magnification.
It has dual card slots that support UHS-II SD cards. This allows you to record high-resolution video or burst shots without worrying about running out of space or speed, and you can use one slot as a backup or for different file formats.

The Canon R7 can record 4K videos at a frame rate of up to 60 fps without cropping, enabling you to capture every detail and movement with precision and fluidity. Alternatively, you can choose to shoot 4K videos at 30 fps with oversampling from 6K, providing you with even greater detail and sharpness. It is capable of shooting Full HD videos at a maximum of 120 fps, which is ideal for producing captivating and cinematic slow-motion effects effortlessly. The camera supports Canon Log-3, expanding the dynamic range and enhancing color grading possibilities. It also includes a microphone input and headphone jack for audio recording and monitoring.

Another noteworthy feature that makes this camera an excellent choice for capturing both photo and video, is its autofocus system.
The R7 uses dual pixel CMOS AF II technology, utilizing phase-detection pixels on the sensor to achieve speedy and precise focus. The camera can focus even in low-light situations as dim as -5 EV and with narrow apertures like f/22 allowing for sharp images when using telephoto lenses with teleconverters.
Furthermore, the camera has advanced subject tracking capabilities that can recognize and track the faces, eyes, heads, and bodies of both humans and animals. This feature is perfect for capturing portraits, wildlife, sports, and more.

Its smooth and efficient workflow makes it easy for you to use.
The vari-angle touchscreen allows you to adjust settings, review images, zoom in and out, and select focus points. In addition, the electronic viewfinder provides a clear and bright preview of your scene. The joystick and control ring on RF lenses enable you to customize various functions.
The R7 supports dual memory card slots that can accommodate SD cards with UHS-II speed class. The camera also supports dual pixel RAW mode that records additional information about depth and focus for post-processing. The camera's clean HDMI output is ideal for use with external monitors or recorders.
Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity on the R7 enable you to transfer images and videos wirelessly to your smartphone, tablet or computer. You can use the Canon Camera Connect app to control the camera remotely, view live images, adjust settings, and download files. Additionally, the Canon Image Transfer Utility 2 software automatically uploads files to cloud services such as Google Drive or Adobe Creative Cloud.

Despite a relatively short battery life, the R7 still offers great value for its price range, priced at 1499$ for the body only, and 1899$ with a new RF-S 18-150 millimeter lens.

If you prefer a full-frame camera, a cheaper camera or a camera with longer battery life, then the Canon R7 might not be your best option.
But, if you are looking for a versatile and capable camera that can handle various shooting scenarios, especially sports and wildlife photography, and if you wouldn't bother carrying an extra spare battery with you when you’re on the go, the R7 would suit you well.

Thank you for tuning in today and as always,

Happy Shooting!
