The Fourth Labor of Hercules: Capturing the Erymanthian Boar

After slaying the Hydra and completing his third labor, Hercules was sent on a cold and dangerous mission—the fourth labor: to capture the Erymanthian Boar alive.

This wasn’t just any wild pig. The Erymanthian Boar was a massive beast that lived on Mount Erymanthus. It had bristling hair, iron tusks, and unmatched fury. Whenever it charged through the forests of Arcadia, it left a path of destruction—flattening trees, trampling farmland, and terrifying villages.

King Eurystheus, always hoping Hercules would fail, ordered him to bring the monster back alive—not slain. That made the task even harder.

As Hercules traveled toward Mount Erymanthus, he stopped to visit an old friend: Pholus, a kind and wise centaur who lived in a cave near the mountain. Pholus welcomed him with food and warmth, and the two sat talking by firelight. Curious, Hercules asked about a jar of sacred wine that belonged to all centaurs.

Though hesitant, Pholus allowed Hercules a taste. But the scent of the wine floated far and wide—and it drew other centaurs to the cave, angry and wild. Soon, a full-blown battle erupted.

Centaurs charged in fury. Hercules was forced to defend himself, using his club and his poisoned arrows. During the chaos, his dear friend Pholus accidentally pricked himself with one of Hercules’ poisoned arrows and died—an unexpected tragedy that left Hercules heartbroken.

Grieving but determined, Hercules climbed up the snow-covered slopes of Mount Erymanthus. The winds howled, and frost bit his skin. He tracked the mighty boar through icy ravines and dense pine forests until he found it rooting through the snow.

The boar saw him and charged—tusks gleaming, snorts echoing. But Hercules stood firm. At the right moment, he leapt aside and trapped the beast in deep snow. He wrestled it with raw strength, tied it with chains, and dragged the furious creature down the mountain.

When Hercules returned to King Eurystheus with the living boar, the king was so terrified that he hid inside a bronze jar, peeking out in fear. That image—of a king cowering while a hero stood tall—became legendary.

This labor proved that Hercules was not only strong, but clever, brave in the coldest wilderness, and respectful of life—capturing a monster alive, even through personal loss.
