Back on the 27th of May last year Amaurie Johnson sat outside of his friend's apartment complex waiting for him to get home. Officer Matt Dages accused Mr. Johnson of smoking, and since he sat close to a Grossmont Trolley stop Dages wanted to fine him. Mr. Johnson has denied that accusation he was smoking.

To make a long story short, the whole situation escalated due to Officer Dages aggressive and abusive behaviour. Amaurie Johnson was ultimately charged with assault on an officer and resisting arrest.

La Mesa PD released body camera from the incident after his friends posted their footage on social media, and the department received an overwhelming amount of criticism. The alleged assualt was not to be seen on any footage. Little over a week after the arrest, it was announced that the charges would be dropped.

In late June Amaurie Johnson filed a lawsuit against the city, the Pd and the officers involved in the incident. On the 7th of August Officer Dages was fired from La Mesa PD. He appealed his firing, but it was upheld by a city review panel on the 10th of December. And now finally, on the 4th of January former officer Dages was charged with one count of falsifying a police report. Dages could face three years in prison if convicted.
