A tragic accident has taken place in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh district.
A family of 9 members from Kanakeda village went on a pilgrimage to a temple in Bhilwara.
After prayers, they started their return journey at midnight.
Because of heavy rainfall, the police had blocked main highways with barricades.
The family used Google Maps navigation to find an alternate route.
Unfortunately, Google Maps suggested a path through a bridge over the Banas river.
But this bridge was broken and was already closed for safety reasons.
There were no clear warning boards near the bridge.
The family’s SUV car entered the bridge but got stuck in the middle.
Within seconds, strong flood currents pushed the vehicle into the river.
Villagers nearby heard screams for help and rushed with boats.
They managed to rescue 5 people alive.
But tragically, 3 people – a mother, her daughter, and another woman – died.
The body of an 8-year-old girl is still missing, and rescue operations are ongoing with the help of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force).
We are not blaming Google Maps.
But giving awareness about the google maps.
AI-based shortest route suggestions in google map which in rural India often fails to identify closed, broken, or flooded roads.
In 2022, Kerala, a couple followed Google Maps and directed them into a flooded underpass.
In Maharashtra (2023), travelers were stranded on a washed-out bridge due to wrong navigation.
Road safety experts say: “Digital maps cannot always show real-time ground conditions in rural areas.
They suggest Google must work with local governments to update routes during floods, rains, or road repairs.
Also the local administration failed to put proper barricades and signboards at the bridge.
So keep safe travel during midnight and rainfall seasons.
