You need to know how to troubleshoot a heat pump and make it go into defrost mode. The defrost cycle melts the iced-up coil on the heat pump outside on really cold days by essentially going into air conditioning mode. Because remember, in cooling mode, the outdoor coil becomes the hot coil. The heat pump defrost board controls the switchover valve, better known as the reversing valve.
