(23 Mar 2020) India's capital has gone in lockdown mode as the government announced stringent measures to shut down all but essential services to contain the virus outbreak that has infected at least 415 and killed 7 on the country.
To contain the outbreak, authorities have gradually started to shutdown much of the country of 1.3 billion people starting Monday.
At least 80 districts, where cases of infection have been detected, are under stringent lockdown.
Police and health care were operating, but commercial establishments have closed except for essential services.
Pharmacies and grocery shops have been allowed to stay open and people were seen stocking up on food and medicines.
The government has fervently appealed for people to practice social distancing and wash their hands.
India also was one of the first countries to essentially shut its borders and deny entry to all but a select few foreigners.
Volunteers from the civil defense department have taken to the streets to help passersby sanitize their hands and spread awareness about the virus.
The lockdown was followed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for a people's curfew on Sunday.
Lockdowns in other places have lasted at least two weeks, which is believed to be the maximum incubation period of the virus.
The federal government warned Monday of strict legal action for those who flout the rules.
Globally, the coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 341,700 people and killed more than 14,700.
Most patients who contract the new coronavirus develop only mild symptoms and recover after about two weeks.
But the virus is highly contagious and can be spread by those with no visible symptoms.
For older adults and people with underlying health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
