A Gibbon’s One Last Song

Now, that's one loud monkey! Meet the Western hoolock gibbon, or as many call it, the white-browed gibbon. This particular one has formed a special bond with one of the forest staff members here at the Pu’er Sun River National Forest Park in China. Every day, this noisy little creature loves hitching a ride on her shoulders during their daily strolls.

Like other gibbons, white-browed gibbons are known for their powerful vocalizations. In the wild, they perform elaborate duets high up in the forest canopy, often joined by younger family members. It's a real jungle choir!

But here's the sad truth: the Western hoolock gibbon is endangered. Back in the 1980s, there were over 100,000 of them. Now? Less than 5,000 remain. They’re even listed among the top 25 most endangered primates by the IUCN.

Their diet is crucial for the ecosystem. These gibbons are expert seed dispersers, munching mostly on ripe fruits, with the occasional flower, leaf, or shoot. And they’ve got a taste for insects too—silkworms, ants, and more make it onto their menu.
