Still cleaning your grill with that scraggly wire brush that’s seemingly older than the tradition of backyard grilling itself? Then you certainly haven’t seen the news lately. The bristles on those metal brushes can break off as you’re scraping up the burnt-on remains of last week’s steak dinner. And they can end up in your food, in your mouth — or worse.

In the video above, we tested out a hack that aims to eliminate sharp metal pieces from the grill-cleaning equation. Maybe you’ve seen it on TikTok: Cleaning a grill with an onion. The idea is that the onion’s acidity will get the gunk off your grill. Since an onion is au naturale, you don’t have to wait for any sort of cleaner to burn off before you put the meat down. (Maybe there’s even a little flavor boost!)

Here’s the hack:
1. First up, turn your grill on high. This will burn off any loose stuff.
2. Then, slice your onion in half. You can leave the skin on, so … no tears!
3. Lifestyle magazine Southern Living says you can spritz some vinegar or lemon juice onto the cut side of the onion to give it some extra power.
4. It’s recommended that you wear gloves during the cleaning process, so put those on now.
5. Work the onion along the grill grates with a meat fork until you break up the debris.
6. You can then toss the onion or, if you’re cooking with charcoal, you can throw it right in with the briquettes.
