Carlos Yulo has brought immense pride and glory to our country, though there's been some controversy surrounding his family that has somewhat overshadowed his accomplishments. There's a lot of pain involved on all sides, and it wouldn't be fair to take sides in their personal matters. So, we'll leave it at that and hope that healing comes to his family in time.

What many don't know is that Carlos also had to overcome his own inner demons-facing grueling training sessions, self-doubt, and even suicidal thoughts.

Through it all, one person who stood by him was Ms. Cynthia Carrion, president of Gymnastics Association of the Philippines. She discovered the eager and determined Caloy and has supported him from the beginning, all the way to his gold medal victories-and hopefully, to many more in the future.

Because of their victory, over a hundred youth now have a chance of training in gymnastics through their grassroots program. I can imagine more Caloys in the future!

As I interviewed the Golden Boy, I saw a kid, a young warrior, carrying untold brokenness. Despite this, he inspires countless kids with humble beginnings-na mahilig mag-tumbling at maglaro-to dream big and become a source of national pride.
