Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin held a meeting on Monday with workers building the Nord Stream pipeline, which will connect northwest Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.

He met the workers on the Solitaire, one of the ships laying the pipeline on the floor of the Gulf of Finland.

The premier said the project is moving ahead on schedule.

There are two more vessels that are constructing the pipeline in other parts of the sea. And all the colleagues are keeping up with the timetable. In 2011 we are due to supply gas to our European consumers on the first pipeline, and the second one should start operating in 2012."

Story
After watching the pipeline-laying process, Prime Minister Putin expressed his interest in the project, and said the engineering tasks being tackled by the pipeline team are very challenging.

He said he hopes the project operator, Nord Stream AG, will fulfill all its goals, to a high level of quality.

The premier also said the pipeline should start delivering Russian gas to European consumers in 2011, with the launch of the first leg. The second leg will be in 2012.

The pipeline will capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
