Appleton's Hmong American Immersion School is set to open this fall with 80 students from 4K through fourth grade.

It's the third cultural school in Appleton.

About 3,600 of Appleton's 75,600 residents are Hmong, according to U.S. Census data -- a number that's steadily grown since the first immigrant arrived 50 years ago. School-aged Hmong children are now sometimes two generations removed from Southeast Asia.

The core subjects will be taught in English -- math, science, English and language arts and social studies. But students will learn to speak, read and write in Hmong and take art, music and physical education in Hmong.

Everything from classroom decorations to seating arrangements reflect the Hmong culture, immersing students.

The school was funded through a federal grant. Staff is paid by the district, as is standard with all 15 of Appleton's charter schools.

They plan to add fifth grade next year, eventually opening a middle and high school in the next 10 years.
