Video Text:
Have you ever known how someone was feeling without them saying a word? Perhaps your friend was sad, even though she smiled, or your father was angry, even though he spoke calmly. If this has happened to you, you were probably reading their body language.
Body language is a form of non-verbal communication. It includes all the signals we send with our faces, hands, and bodies. Some experts believe that more than half of what we communicate comes not from words, but from these silent signals. What is truly fascinating is that many of these signals are familiar to us from birth. A baby does not learn to cry when hungry or to smile when happy. These are natural, instinctive ways of communicating.
Throughout our daily lives, our bodies send out messages constantly. The problem is that we often do not stop to read them. We listen to the words, but we forget to watch the body. When we start to pay attention, we begin to realise how much people are really saying.
Our gestures are a big part of this. Gestures are the movements we make with our hands and arms. For example, if someone is listening to you but has their arms tightly crossed, their body position might indicate that they are not open to your ideas, even if they are nodding. They are closed off. On the other hand, when someone likes you or feels comfortable, they might start opening their arms towards you. It is like they are inviting you in.
There are also many small, unconscious movements that reveal our true feelings. Think about a time you felt nervous or dishonest. Maybe you started rubbing your eyes or scratching your nose. When we are stressed or anxious, we might find ourselves clearing our throat repeatedly, even if we do not need to. If we are impatient while waiting, we might start tapping our toes against the floor.
The legs also tell a story. When someone is feeling defensive or uncomfortable, they might sit with their legs crossed tightly away from the person next to them. It is a way of creating a barrier.
So, why is it important to be aware of body language? It helps us understand the people around us. If you are giving a presentation and you see people frowning, it means they might be confused. You can then assess the situation and react by explaining your point again, more clearly.
Our faces are the most expressive part of our body language. We have many phrases to describe these facial signals. When someone is very happy to see you, they have shining eyes that seem to light up. But if they hear shocking news, they might go white as a sheet, losing all the colour from their face.
Anger is also very easy to spot. A parent telling a child off might stand with hands on hips, showing they are in charge. If you are waiting for a late friend, you might see them finally arrive, red in the face from running. And if your boss is listening to your idea while frowning deeply, it is a clear signal that they are not happy with what they are hearing. If someone is sitting nearby and keeps tapping his foot, it probably means they are nervous or impatient.
Learning to read body language is like learning a secret language. Once you start noticing these signals, you will understand so much more about every conversation you have. You will know when someone is truly happy to see you, when they are feeling uncomfortable, or when they are hiding their true feelings. It is a skill that can improve your relationships, your work, and your understanding of the world around you.
The next time you talk to someone, do not just listen to their words. Watch their hands, look at their face, and notice their body position. You might be surprised by how much more you understand.
