Three of my favorite early summer plants are flowering so this is a good time to tell you about them.

Two are native plants. Beauty Berry, Callicarpa americana, is grows in the southern US from Texas to Florida and as far north as Virginia and Missouri. It is better known for its beautiful magenta berries in the fall, but the flowers come first,

Chaste Tree, Vitex agnus-castus, is a shrub or small tree with purple or white flowers that is native to the Mediterranean region. Like Beauty Berry, it grows best in warmer regions but since it flowers on new wood, it can also be grown in colder climates as an herbaceous perennial. Its herbal uses are for both the male and female reproductive systems and in Germany it is prescribed by physicians to treat PMS.

Stokes Aster, Stokesia laevis, is a perennial plant native to the southeastern US. It blooms in the early summer with flowers in shades of purple to white. It is cultivated primarily as a flower garden plant, but it is a pollinator magnet attracting both bees and butterflies.
