Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the contraction of COVID-19 by a security guard in NSW “shows that elimination is impossible if you are going to take people into hotel quarantine”.

A serious investigation is underway to determine how the guard contracted the virus after health authorities confirmed a link between the guard and a returned US traveller staying at the Marriott hotel at Circular Quay following genome sequencing.

The DNA of the virus matched that of the strain that came in from the US, not the strain linked to the Sydney and Melbourne outbreaks.

Mr Clennell said it was “disturbing” to hear the security guard also worked at Parramatta Local Court and the Sydney markets in Flemington while potentially infectious.

However, he pointed out “45,000 people have been through hotel quarantine in Sydney so for this to be the first leak is not a bad achievement”.

Mr Clennell said he had “a lot more faith” in NSW contact tracing, testing and virus management than he did in Victorian systems.
