I've used the Irish spelling of the title, but it's probably more commonly called the "Arran Boat Song", which is the Scottish spelling.
It has been described as 'Scottish Air, Gaelic rowing song, Irish air and even as jig. The tune has also been called 'Highland Boating Song' and 'Queen Mary's Escape from Loch Leven castle'.
It's a variant of a tune which probably got its biggest boost in popularity when Burns found it near Inverness being used for a song of the '45 by Alasdair MacMaighstir Alasdair, and wrote his own text for it, "The Banks of the Devon". Other variants are "The Streets of Laredo" and "Scarce of Tatties". The earliest use of the "Arran Boat Song" title is from Kerr's "Merry Melodies" of the 1880s, but it's unlikely that Kerr made it up.
It's a great tune at any speed - lament, ballad, rowing song, march, jig - which is why it's survived so well.
The "Ceol nam Feis" book describes the origins of the Arran Boat song as being uncertain.... saying that it could be from the Scottish Isle of Arran, or the Aran Islands in Ireland.

The 1,200 inhabitants primarily speak Irish, which is the language used in naming the islands and their villages and townlands.
Arran or the Isle of Arran (Scots Gaelic: Eilean Arainn) is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. Arran is mountainous and has been described as a "geologist's paradise". From the 6th century onwards, Goidelic-speaking peoples from Ireland colonised the island and it became a centre of religious activity. During the troubled Viking Age, Arran became the property of the Norwegian crown before becoming formally absorbed by the kingdom of Scotland in the 13th century. The 19th century "clearances" led to significant depopulation and the end of the Gaelic language and way of life.
