Andrew Loku Inquest - Monday wrap-up. Overall, I believe the Loku Inquest proceedings went well and we were able to call the appropriate experts to provide evidence that delved into uncomfortable topics like implicit bias, racism, disability and specifically the intersectionality of it. We heard from a total of 28 witnesses who brought important perspectives that provides the jury with a wealth of information to use in crafting recommendations. My only qualm throughout the Inquest was the ruling by the Coroner around the use of the word "racism". It was repugnant and unpalatable. I was pleased that he clarified his ruling, permitting counsel and the witness to ask and answer questions unencumbered by the unfortunate ruling. We expect to hear recommendations around training, community engagement and policy changes at various Ministries. These recommendations are scheduled for closing arguments tomorrow, Monday June 26th at the Coroner’s Court at 25 Morton Shulman Ave. Toronto, Ontario M3M 0B1.
