Virsyn Cube Synth Pro (available as AUv3 for iPad, also in a version for M1 Macs, iPhone version is hopefully coming!) is a powerful additive synth and in this video tutorial and review I will walk you through all the main features, giving you most of the info you need to get started without reading the manual. It has a few things I particularly like:
1. The way you.can morph between 4 additive synthesis sound sources
2. The fact that it is MPE (though note that it does not come bundled with many mpe presets, you will have to roll your own)
3. It has a LOT of modulation sources, including all 5 mpe ones and many many more
4. It has excellent randomisation buttons on all screens so you can produce very interesting sounds even if you have a limited understanding of additive synthesis or any other kind of additive synthesis, for that matter.
5. The envelopes you can create in this are INSANE!
6. Great copy and paste functions for various aspects of the additive synthesis, allowing you to do things like apply vocal format filtering to completely unrelated sound sources.
7. Great analogue style detuning
8. An excellent arpeggiator and an extensive inbuilt FX section. There are of course a few things I think could be improved, these will be covered in the video.
00:00 Intro, disclaimer
02:51 Giveaway details
03:20 General overview of the main screen morph pad and the sound sources
08:23 Global control knobs on main screen
13:19 Navigating the screens, criticism of UI / UX, global FX settings
15:55 the different types of randomisation on the 2D page and in the sound sources. Randomisation in this synth is EXCELLENT!
19:24 Criticism of lack of undo / redo buttons, praise of Harry from Virsyn
21:18 The Envelope screen, volume / x / y envelopes, adjusting envelopes, looping envelopes
24:54 understanding the relationship between x and y envelopes, the sound sources and the morph pad - extremely important to grasp
27:15 Inserting and deleting break points, synced envelopes, selecting envelope presets. Criticism: no way to quickly double / halve sync values?
31:18 slide / fixed mode
31:55 How most people will probably use this synth, easy tweaks
33:20 Setting up modulation, with or without an mpe controller, is it a good mpe implementation?
36:02 Some presets that are good examples to help understand modulation type, especially as related to mpe, even arps are mpe!
42:53 A few other controls on the envelope page, an annoyance about the interface that bugs me, something cool about the envelope graphs
44:51 The arp screen. Love the arp! Setting step lengths, tie notes, accents, transposing, adjusting octaves and key numbers, shifting and randomising patterns, arp modes, clock units, swing, randomisation, gate time, accents and velocity
52:50 The FX section
56:26 Let's listen to a few presets and try to understand what's going on in them, what does it really mean to modulate the x or y axis? More about modulation and morphing
01:04:20 Conclusion, final thoughts, review and overall impressions
